Simple Gifts
“ ’Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free…” In the spirit of the traditional Shaker tune, Presbyterians Today’s 2012 Advent devotions invite you to prepare the way for the birth of Jesus simply and generously. The calendar features Scripture readings, meditations and prayers for each day of the Advent season. Children, families, congregations and individuals are invited to explore the biblical story on a deeper level by creating their own simple gifts. Adam Fischer, author of this year’s calendar, is associate pastor of Harvey Browne Presbyterian Church in Louisville, Ky. Illustrations by Carrie Neumayer.

Confessing the Beatitudes Horizons Bible Study English
HZN11100
In the nine lessons of Confessing the Beatitudes, the 2011–2012 Horizons Bible study, Margaret Aymer invites us to to consider the Beatitudes as they might have been heard when Jesus spoke them—during the time of the Roman Empire. While great in many respects, Rome was a cruel regime under which many suffered. We are invited to identify with those who are poor and oppressed and, at the end of each lesson, to enter into a process of confession.
